Passport Services

If you are an Australian citizen requiring emergency consular assistance out of hours, please call the Consular Emergency Centre on 1300 555 135 (within Australia) or +61 2 6261 3305 (from overseas).

 

Plan ahead and don't leave your application for an Australian passport to the last minute.  Allow a minimum of six weeks to renew or receive a new passport.

Ensure that you have all the relevant documents and that you have filled in the form correctly before booking an appointment with or sending the application to us. 

Interviews at the Embassy

If you are attending the embassy for an interview, you MUST bring the passport application with you.

Australian passport applications

If you are located in Portugal, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau or São Tomé and Príncipe, please note the following options for applying or renewing an Australian passport overseas:  

In-person applications

If you fall under one of the following categories, you MUST lodge in person at the Australian Embassy in Lisbon.

  • First time applicants
  • Child passport (under 18 years of age)
  • First adult passport and your child passport was issued to you at 15 years or younger
  • Replacing a lost or stolen passport
  • Name change or personal details on the passport
  • First passport after resumption of citizenship
  • Replacing a limited validity passport, emergency passport, or other temporary travel document
  • You cannot answer the security questions for the renewal form.

You must have an appointment to submit your passport application at the Embassy.

Adult renewal by mail

If you are renewing a full-validity adult passport, you are eligible to submit your application by mail.

To submit your application by mail, all of the following must be true:
  • You are an adult (18 years or older), AND
  • Your most recent passport was issued when you were 16 years or over on or after 01/01/2006, AND
  • You are not changing any of your personal details on the passport, AND
  • Your most recent passport is/was valid for over 2 years at the time of issue, AND
  • Your most recent passport has not been reported lost/stolen AND
  • You are successfully able to answer the security questions on the website.

 

Child renewals by mail

You can lodge your PC8 child renewal applications by post.
 
Eligibility:
  • under the age of 16 (i.e. 15 or below) and
  • has previously held an Australian passport  
Children aged 16-17 are not eligible for postal applications.

Urgent travel

If you have urgent travel or have had your passport lost or stolen during your trip, please contact the Embassy as you may be eligible to apply for an Emergency Passport. You will need to provide evidence of urgency.
