How do I apply for my child's passport renewal by mail?
Applications by mail (PC8 - passport renewals for children under the age of 16 only)
Eligibility
Child passport renewal applications (PC8) can be mailed-in provided the applicant is:
-
under the age of 16 (i.e. 15 or below);
-
has previoulsy held an Australian passport and is not lost or stolen
If your child does not meet these criteria, you’ll need to book an appointment to lodge your child's application in person.
For first-time child applications, replacing lost/stolen passports and applicants aged 16 or 17, the application must be lodged in person, by appointment only.
1. Get the form
Complete the passport application form at www.passports.gov.au and print it. You will need to create an account first. When you complete the application form online, you will automatically be directed to the correct form, as well as to a list of required supporting documents.
Send us the completed form, two passport photographs, copies of both parents' ID and both parents' proof of address.
Depending on your circumstances, we may require additional documents. We will contact you should this be required. For further information, please visit the Australian Passport Office.
2. Print, sign and date the form
Print: You may need to adjust your print settings to ensure the top/bottom of the pages are not missing.
Sign: Ensure all sections are signed and witnessed where required before you send the form to us.
Date: Signatures are valid for six months only.
Children 10 years or older must provide a signature (in section 18) unless there is a medical reason or disability that prevents them from signing.
Parental Consent - Section 15 of the parental consent page – both parents must provide their parental consent for the child to have an Australian travel document. Both parents must have their signatures witnessed by someone who is not related to them or to the child by birth, marriage, de facto or same sex relationship, or live at the same address as the applicant or parents of the child applicant. Parents are not able to witness each other’s signatures.
3. Parents' proof of identity
Please submit copies of both parents’ ID showing their name, photo and signature, as well as a copy of proof of address, such as an utility bill. Photocopies should be of good quality, either in black and white or colour.
Name changes: If the current names of either parent are different to how they appear on the child’s birth certificate, please include certified copies of the IDs, proof of address and documents explaining the change of name, such as a marriage certificate.
Certified copies can be taken by a solicitor/lawyer or a Portuguese Notary Public. This is only necessary if there are any changes in parental circumstances, such as a name change.
4. Photographs and Guarantor
Two identical passport photographs of the applicant - one of these must be endorsed by a guarantor and must be no more than six months old.
We recommend you have your photos taken by a photographer. You can provide them with the photograph guidelines. Photos taken in a photo booth will be rejected.
A guarantor must sign the application and endorse the back of one photo for all PC8 applications. The guarantor cannot be related to the applicant.
Section 11 of the guarantor page – the guarantor must endorse “This is a true photo of applicant’s full name” and sign at the back of one of the applicant’s photographs in black pen. Please note, the signature at the back of the photo must match the signature in section 11 of the form.
