AlickTipoti

Alick Tipoti wins 2014 Telstra
National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award 3D Category

Three times Telstra Award winner wins again with his magnificent 2.5 metre sculpture titled, Kaygasiw Usul (Shovel Nose shark dust trail reflected in the heavens as the Milky Way).

This is the first win for Tipoti in the 3D category. Previous wins were in 2003 and 2007 for Works on Paper and 2008 for the People’s Choice Award. The artist is the first Torres Strait Islander to win the Telstra NATSIA 3D Award.

Tipoti’s rise to prominence as an important Australian artist came through his linocuts, which are often executed on a monumental scale. His 8 metre ‘Girelal’ lino showed in the 2012 Biennale of Sydney. More recently, his sculptures are advancing his reputation with works in this medium being acquired by a number of institutions including the British Museum, National Gallery of Australia and the National Museum of Australia.
